Sandstone Patio Extension and Family Garden Upgrade in Stourbridge

When a residential garden is built on a severe, multi-tiered incline, transforming it into a practical family space requires far more than surface-level design; it demands expert structural landscaping. We were recently approached by a family on Gayfield Avenue in Brierley Hill whose garden suffered from steep slopes, shifting levels, and a failing retaining wall that was already significantly leaning. The owners needed a safe, flat area where their boys could play football.

The clients reached out to MDK Garden Services after receiving a glowing personal recommendation from a colleague whose own garden we had completely transformed the previous year. Having seen our attention to detail, they trusted us to step in and handle a highly technical restoration. This extensive project provided the perfect opportunity to showcase our expertise in structural landscaping and premium garden design.

What the Client Wanted

The primary objective was to expand the usable living space while respecting the existing garden structure. The lower section of the property featured an existing natural sandstone patio that was slightly too small for family gatherings and outdoor furniture.

The client’s specific project requirements included:

  • Extending the existing lower-level natural sandstone patio to create a larger, unified terrace.
  • Working carefully around established flower borders to protect existing root systems.
  • Updating and strengthening the existing timber raised beds along the patio perimeter.
  • Creating a dedicated play area in an underutilised, semi-shaded zone at the bottom of the garden.
  • Completing all construction work prior to the start of the school summer holidays.

Planning the Sandstone Patio Extension

Engineering a hillside requires deep technical foresight rather than superficial design concepts. In the current landscaping industry, there is an overreliance on artificial intelligence tools to quickly generate pristine, idealised garden images. However, an automated algorithm cannot identify real-world site challenges, calculate soil retaining
weights, or predict how a slope will interact with local weather.

For this project, we bypassed generic trends entirely and relied purely on human intelligence and local expertise. Martina imported the physical site parameters into our professional garden design software. Instead of dropping in random, mathematically generated plants that would fail in the local climate, she drew upon her years of
horticultural experience to curate a bespoke planting scheme perfectly suited for a structural landscaping environment. Every single variety was hand-selected from our trusted local suppliers to guarantee the plants would genuinely survive and thrive on this specific Brierley Hill hillside.

The Build and Installation

The true scale of a structural landscaping project like this cannot be captured solely by neat “before and after” pictures. The images taken during the middle of the construction phase are the most important part of this story, revealing the immense technical challenges our team navigated every single day.

Over a demanding six-week period, our crew operated heavy mechanical diggers on a highly challenging, steep slope. As the excavation progressed, we uncovered unexpected obstacles buried under the back bank, alongside a failing soakaway system that was pooling water directly under the old patio. We ordered an immediate drainage survey to map out exact connection points for new pipes, resolving the subsurface water issues
permanently.

In total, our team excavated and moved between 80 and 100 tons of material out of the garden, utilising four massive commercial lorries to clear the site. We then engineered a robust boundary retaining wall constructed from durable sleepers slotted into steel posts, paired with a structurally sound brick retaining wall designed to perfectly match the architectural look of the family home.

Operating on a site this unpredictable presents significant financial risks. Groundwork is never as straightforward as purchasing a fixed-price retail product. However, MDK handles that financial risk entirely on behalf of the client. We agreed on a comprehensive structural package upfront, and despite the hidden surprises found during excavation, we strictly honoured our original quote without adding a single penny to the base price
mid-build. The only additional costs were completely transparent client-requested extras, which included premium improvements to the patio and the construction of beautiful timber sleeper raised beds.

The Finished Garden

The completed landscape subtly enhances what was already present in the garden while adding clear functional zones for the family. The extended lower terrace provides ample room for family meals and relaxation, with the new sandstone paving blending smoothly into the original patio layout.

The updated raised beds frame the patio cleanly, protecting the mature border planting that the clients were keen to keep. Down at the lower end of the garden, the new bark play zone gives the children a dedicated area to enjoy throughout the summer.

Delivering the completed project just before the school holidays meant the family could begin using the space immediately. By combining practical family areas with mature planting, the finished project provides a versatile outdoor environment that will adapt easily as the children grow.
