Complete Front and Back Garden Transformation: Low Maintenance Design in Brierley Hill

When Bev contacted us, she was refreshingly honest about her family’s situation. They’d recently completed extensive interior renovations to their home and wanted their gardens (both front and back) to reflect the same quality and care. The problem? Both spaces had become rather uninviting and non-creative over the years, essentially blank canvases, and the family freely admitted they had absolutely no gardening skills or interest in developing any. What they needed was a low maintenance garden design in Brierley Hill that would look beautiful year-round without demanding weekend after weekend of upkeep. Having seen the transformation we’d created for their neighbours a few years earlier, they knew we could deliver exactly what they were after.

What the Client Wanted

Bev’s brief was wonderfully clear. She wanted gardens that would make her smile when she looked out of the window, but wouldn’t make her panic about weeding, deadheading, or any of the tasks that keen gardeners seem to enjoy. The existing spaces had been untouched for so long that there was essentially nothing worth keeping, bar one beautiful birch tree in the back garden that the family loved and wanted to retain as a feature.

The newly renovated interior of the home was contemporary and immaculate, and Bev wanted the gardens to feel like a natural extension of that investment. She’d done her research and knew she wanted porcelain tiles rather than traditional paving (no pressure washing, no moss, no fuss). Raised beds were high on the wish list too, making any necessary plant maintenance easier without bending down to ground level. Most importantly, the planting scheme needed to be genuinely low maintenance: evergreens for year-round structure, interesting foliage for visual appeal, and perhaps some early spring colour from bulbs. Beyond that, anything that needed regular attention was off the table.

Planning a Low Maintenance Solution

Our initial consultation focused on understanding how the family actually used their space, or rather, how they wanted to use it. These weren’t gardeners who’d be pottering about with secateurs on Sunday mornings. They wanted to look at a beautiful garden, perhaps sit in it during summer, but primarily enjoy it through the windows whilst getting on with their busy lives.

The planning phase is crucial for any successful project like this. We took detailed measurements of both front and back gardens, assessed the light levels throughout the day, and examined soil conditions. The birch tree became our anchor point for the back garden design, and we planned everything else to complement its elegant form and dappled shade. The design incorporated curved mirrored lines throughout, which soften the visual appearance of the garden and create a more natural, flowing aesthetic that’s far more pleasing to the eye than rigid straight edges.

Material selection was straightforward. We sourced high-quality porcelain tiles in a neutral cream tone that would complement the home’s contemporary aesthetic whilst staying clean naturally through rainfall. For the planted areas, we specified a professional landscape membrane topped with bark mulch. This combination would suppress weeds far more effectively than bare soil whilst retaining moisture and looking neat year-round.

The raised beds were designed at a comfortable working height, constructed with sleeper-style edging that matched the contemporary feel. However, their inclusion wasn’t purely aesthetic. The garden had a significant slope that we needed to address. We lowered the angle of the sloping ground to reduce the gradient, but we couldn’t lower the fence levels due to their relationship with the neighbours’ gardens. This made raised beds the perfect solution—they’re functional, practical, and aesthetic, creating level planting areas whilst managing the elevation changes in the garden.

Where we needed to hold back more substantial amounts of soil and slope, we designed a curved masonry retaining wall. When it comes to retaining walls, brick construction offers far greater longevity and structural integrity than stacked sleepers, and aesthetically, a well-built brick wall doesn’t have the cheap appearance that excessive sleeper use can sometimes create. Balance is key—we use sleepers for raised bed edging where appropriate, but for genuine soil retention, brick is the superior choice.

Perhaps most importantly, we planned a mowing strip around the entire lawn perimeter. This simple detail (a band of paving at grass height) means the mower runs straight over the edge, eliminating the need for strimming and edging after every cut.

Bringing the Design to Life

Work began in the back garden, as we always prefer to complete the space that will see most disruption first. The existing turf was stripped, levels were adjusted to ensure proper drainage away from the house, and we installed a comprehensive sub-base for the porcelain patio area. Unlike traditional paving, porcelain tiles require precise installation on a specific bed. There’s no room for error, but the payoff is a surface that will look pristine for decades.

Constructing the raised beds came next—this had to be done before the lawn mowing strip (LMS) installation. We built them to knee height, high enough to eliminate bending but low enough to remain in proportion with the garden. The curved masonry retaining wall was also constructed at this stage, providing both structural support and visual interest. Once the raised beds were constructed, we filled them with a quality topsoil and compost blend, creating the perfect growing medium for the plant palette we’d selected.

The mowing strip was then installed as a continuous border around what would become the new lawn area. We used the same porcelain tiles, cutting them to size and setting them perfectly level with the prepared soil height. This attention to detail during installation is what makes a garden genuinely low maintenance rather than just a marketing claim.

The planting scheme was where our horticultural expertise really came into play. Every plant was chosen not just for its appearance, but for its ability to thrive with minimal intervention. We used a framework of evergreen shrubs to provide year-round structure and colour. These were interspersed with perennials whose foliage provides interest across multiple seasons without deadheading or cutting back until late winter.

For early spring colour, we planted daffodil bulbs in drifts under the birch tree. This was the one area where we didn’t install landscape membrane, as creating holes for hundreds of individual bulbs would have been destructive to the membrane’s integrity. The concentrated planting of daffodils beneath the birch creates a beautiful focal point in early spring, and the area is planned as a future wildflower meadow experiment—offering a perfect seasonal rotation where the daffodils provide spring colour as the meadow goes dormant, and vice versa. Once all planting was complete elsewhere, we applied a generous layer of bark mulch over the professional landscape membrane in the raised beds, creating that clean, finished look whilst locking in moisture and suppressing any opportunistic weeds.

The front garden followed a similar approach but on a smaller scale, with a generous porcelain paved area near the entrance and raised beds flanking the path. We retained symmetry and structure whilst keeping the planting scheme consistent with the back garden, creating visual cohesion between the two spaces.

Throughout the project, Bev and her family were wonderful to work with. They trusted our expertise whilst staying engaged with progress, and we kept disruption to a minimum despite the comprehensive nature of the transformation.

The Finished Garden

The transformation was remarkable. What had been bland, uninviting spaces front and back were now sophisticated, contemporary gardens that genuinely required minimal upkeep. The porcelain paving gleamed, and more importantly, would continue to gleam without jet washing or chemical treatments. The raised beds brought planting up to eye level, creating layers of interest and making the spaces feel immediately established rather than newly planted. The birch tree, previously standing rather forlornly in an empty lawn, now felt like the intentional centrepiece it deserved to be, with the planting scheme complementing its elegant form and seasonal interest. The new lawn, with its integrated mowing strip, could be cut in minutes without any need for subsequent tidying.

Bev’s feedback delighted us: “Thanks Martina for creating our wonderful new garden. You and your team were brilliant. You designed a beautiful space and your team worked tirelessly to bring it to life. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending you to anyone.”

The family now has exactly what they wanted: gardens that enhance their home’s kerb appeal and provide a beautiful outlook from inside, but which won’t dominate their weekends with endless maintenance tasks. A quick mow every week or two, and perhaps a light trim of the shrubs once a year, is genuinely all that’s required.
