Low Maintenance Garden Transformation in Halesowen

The Challenge

After completing extensive interior renovations, Anita wanted her outdoor space to reflect the same level of quality and care. The garden had been neglected for years, with broken paving in the front and an uninviting rear space that offered little functionality or aesthetic appeal. The existing back fence panels were damaged, and the overall layout provided no clear areas for relaxation or entertainment.

As a busy homeowner without green fingers, Anita needed a solution that would look attractive throughout the seasons whilst requiring minimal ongoing maintenance. She was understandably concerned about making costly mistakes, particularly with plant selection. Having been recommended by family members for whom we’d previously worked, she trusted us to deliver a complete garden transformation without requiring detailed architectural drawings. The brief was clear: create a beautiful, low maintenance garden that the whole family could enjoy without the burden of extensive upkeep. Anita wanted the confidence that her investment would result in a space that looked professionally finished and remained attractive all year round.

The Solution

We began by completely reimagining both the front and rear gardens, focusing on durable materials and thoughtful design. In the rear garden, we installed 32 square metres of porcelain patio measuring 3.6 metres from the house and 8.8 metres fence to fence. An excess water channel with grill was integrated between the patio and house, connecting to proper drainage to prevent water accumulation. Sleeper retaining walls, approximately 30 to 40 centimetres high, were constructed with 1.2 metre wide steps leading up to a new 44 square metre lawn.

Practical considerations included recycling the existing slabs to create a 3 by 5.4 metre shed base in the top left corner, with cables and pipes installed to service the area. We built 40 centimetre high planters on both sides, 4.8 metres long on the right and 2.4 metres on the left, and replaced four damaged back fence panels with new 5 foot by 6 foot sections. The front garden received equal attention, with the entire broken slabbed area replaced with block paving whilst retaining several beds to maintain character and kerb appeal.

Once the main landscaping neared completion, we addressed Anita’s concerns about planting. Rather than risk the common mistake of impulse buying from garden centres, we created a detailed visualisation based on the nearly finished garden. This visual plan gave Anita complete confidence in our approach, as she could see exactly how the finished space would appear. We recommended a carefully balanced combination of evergreen shrubs for structure and year-round interest, complemented by herbaceous perennials for seasonal colour. Scented smaller shrubs were positioned near the patio, adding sensory appeal to the relaxation area.

The transformation exceeded Anita’s expectations. What had been a neglected, uninviting outdoor space was now a sophisticated garden that genuinely required minimal upkeep. The porcelain paving provided a generous entertaining area that would remain pristine without jet washing or chemical treatments. The raised planters brought greenery up to eye level, creating layers of interest whilst making any necessary plant maintenance far easier without bending to ground level. The carefully selected planting scheme provided year-round structure through evergreen shrubs, with herbaceous perennials adding seasonal colour without demanding regular deadheading or fussy care. The scented plants near the patio created a sensory experience during warm evenings, whilst the new lawn, framed by the sleeper retaining walls, offered a lush green space for relaxation. The front garden’s block paving and retained beds dramatically improved kerb appeal, creating a welcoming entrance that reflected the quality of the renovated interior.

As Anita commented: “We are loving the garden, can’t stop looking at it! Lawn looks so lovely and green and healthy. Once again, thank you for all your help and advice.”
