School Garden Design at Nishkam School, Birmingham

School garden design at its most rewarding begins with a clear vision and a client who trusts the process. We were first approached by Nishkam School in 2023 to design and build a memorial garden, and what started as a single commission has grown into an ongoing partnership built on quality, trust, and a shared commitment to inspiring young people.

Choosing a Landscaping Company

The Challenge

Nishkam School wanted a memorial garden that was beautiful enough to be seen and appreciated from the classrooms above, creating a space that staff and students could feel genuinely proud of. The design needed to be thoughtful, seasonally interesting, and reflective in character.

Following the success of that first project, the school secured additional funding through the Aston Villa Foundation to extend the garden into an educational growing space for students. The new phase needed to be practical and engaging, giving young people hands-on experience with planting, growing food, and understanding why pollinators are so important to the environment.

The Solution

We completed the original memorial garden to a high standard, incorporating an edible growing area as part of the initial design. The response from staff was telling — teachers whose classrooms overlook the garden commented that it had become a genuine pleasure to teach in, with the view making a real difference to the atmosphere inside.

For the Aston Villa Foundation-funded extension, we designed and built raised beds with a planting scheme focused on pollinator-friendly species. Three teaching sessions were delivered across the year, each six weeks apart, covering how to plant, why pollinators matter, and the direct link between healthy pollinator populations and food production. Students also built bug hotels and bird feeders, with many using tools such as hammers and saws for the very first time. New signage was added throughout, reinforcing the connection between the edible garden and the wider natural environment.

The Finished Garden

The Nishkam school garden now combines a reflective memorial space with a thriving, sustainable growing area used as a live classroom. Students have gained practical skills and a real understanding of the natural world, and we will be continuing with ongoing maintenance to keep the garden in excellent condition throughout the seasons. This project is a clear example of how good school garden design can do far more than improve an outdoor space — it can shape how young people see and engage with the world around them.
